Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued overlapping warnings for Thursday morning as a strong weather system moves across British Columbia’s South Coast and the Lower Mainland.
Heavy rain is expected across several areas, including Metro Vancouver, the North Shore, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, and Howe Sound.
“An additional 20 to 40 mm of rainfall can be expected before the rain eases off later this evening,” reported Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Meteorologist Michael Kuss from 1130 NewsRadio said the heaviest rain will likely coincide with the afternoon commute. Water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas could heavily affect traffic and raise the risk of local utility outages.
Strong winds are forecast for Richmond, Delta, the Sunshine Coast, and much of eastern Vancouver Island, with gusts expected to reach 70 to 90 kilometres per hour.
“Residents are advised to secure loose objects,” the agency cautioned, noting that winds should taper off later in the evening.
Heavy rain and strong winds are set to hit B.C.’s South Coast, prompting official warnings and safety advisories for residents across affected regions.
