Sikorsky has unveiled a Black Hawk prototype that transforms the 50-year-old aircraft into an autonomous vehicle, designed to accompany manned missions in the air.
The new unmanned helicopter prototype, called the U-Hawk, retains the familiar size, shape, rotors, and green paint job of the Army's Black Hawk, but with a futuristic twist. The cockpit and nose have been replaced with clam shell-style opening doors, allowing an ATV-sized vehicle to be driven onboard via a built-in ramp.
The new front end — along with the lack of pilots — may strike former passengers or crew alike as strictly sci-fi.
The U-Hawk is designed to work alongside manned aircraft, marking a significant shift in the design of the iconic Black Hawk.
