Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Senate Bill 518, creating the Bureau for Descendants of American Slavery, the first state agency dedicated to implementing reparations for Black Americans.

Authored by Senator Akilah Weber Pierson, SB 518 establishes a permanent state agency to implement reparations policies for descendants of enslaved African Americans and those harmed by racially motivated eminent domain in California.
The bill was signed into law after a meeting between Governor Newsom and members of the California Legislative Black Caucus, including Senator Weber Pierson, the chair of the CLBC and author of the bill.
