Super funds just posted another solid year. Here’s what they’re leaving on the table

Super Funds' Performance Review

Australia's superannuation funds have posted a solid year, with the median balanced option delivering around 10 per cent in FY25, exceeding targets.

However, there is an argument that returns could have been even better. A simple portfolio with a modest gold allocation returned over 18 per cent in FY25, almost double the median super fund's performance.

Gold did what it has always done: provided ballast when markets get rocky.

Most large funds have no gold allocation, despite its potential benefits. A modest 1 to 5 per cent allocation, dollar-cost averaged over the past five years, could have added tens of billions to Australians' retirement savings.

Additionally, assets like Bitcoin have proven to be highly performant over the past decade, making a strong case for consideration in investment portfolios.

Author's summary: Super funds could improve returns with alternative assets.
