UNISON General Secretary Calls for Return to Core Labour Principles

Christina McAnea delivered a keynote speech at the Disabled Members' Conference 2025, emphasizing the need for ministers to return to core Labour principles.

"The harsh austerity policies of successive Conservative governments had a devastating impact on disabled people across the country... Not only did their spending cuts hit the essential services so many rely upon. Tory ministers also tried to portray disabled people as undeserving: wilfully avoiding employment and defrauding the system."

McAnea expressed disappointment with the current Labour government, stating that despite promises to improve the lives of working people, expectations have not been met.

Author's summary: Labour ministers must prioritize equality and public services.
