Will a New UN Mission Succeed in ‘Neutralizing’ Haiti’s Murderous Gangs?

Gangs in Haiti have taken over 90 percent of the capital, despite the presence of an armed United Nations mission.

A new international force has a stronger mandate to fight the criminal groups, but faces the same challenges as its predecessor.

A funeral was held for four Haitian police officers, killed in gang violence and a drone attack, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, September 6, 2025.

“So far, what we have is a name change,”

said Nathalye Cotrino of Human Rights Watch.

Analysts are questioning whether the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) will be any more effective than the previous UN mission.
