Montana Ranchers Uneasy as Trump Plans to Import Argentina Beef
President Donald Trump announced plans to import 80,000 metric tons of Argentina beef, which he says will bring down beef prices.
Lesley Robinson, president of the Montana Stockgrowers Association, expressed concerns about the impact on the domestic beef market, stating:
Mainly across the board in feeling the same sentiment that we just would like the president to not intervene in our domestic beef market.
Eric Belasco, a professor at Montana State University's agricultural economics department, noted that imports can modestly lower prices, but the beef market is driven mostly by domestic production, which supplies 80-90% of consumer demand.
