Fewest since 2001 say crime is increasing in America: Gallup poll

Gallup's annual crime poll found 49% of Americans think crime is increasing, down from 64% a year ago and 77% two years ago.

Criminologist Alex Piquero notes that while crime is a problem in the U.S. compared to other countries, it has been trending in the right direction.

“We're moving in a really good direction in this country,” he said. “And that's a credit to law enforcement and all the non-law enforcement agencies around the United States that are working together to drive down the crime problem.”

The Gallup poll also found that more Republicans (69%) than independents (45%) or Democrats (37%) view crime as an extremely or very serious problem, but all three groups are less likely to say crime is a big problem now than they were a couple of years ago.

Alex Piquero, a professor at the University of Miami and a former director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics, said the country is on track to record the lowest levels of homicide since the early 1960s.

Author's summary: Gallup poll shows decline in Americans thinking crime is increasing.
