Democrats have made significant gains in both the Suffolk and Nassau County Legislatures, unseating a Republican incumbent in Suffolk and claiming an open seat in Nassau.
In Suffolk's 1st District, Democrat Greg Doroski defeated Republican Legis. Stark for the North Fork seat. According to Suffolk Democratic chairman Richard Schaffer, the results demonstrate the party's resilience, as he stated:
In Suffolk County, when we get knocked down, we get right back up and we’re ready to fight.
Meanwhile, in Nassau, Democrats picked up an open seat. Although final results were not yet conclusive in Nassau's 9th district, incumbent Republican Scott P. Strauss was leading Democrat Juleigh Chin.
