Netflix has unveiled the opening five minutes of Stranger Things Season 5, taking viewers back to 1983 during Will Byers’ disappearance and his connection to the Upside Down.
The new season starts exactly where the story first began, inside the Upside Down. Instead of continuing directly from the Season 4 finale, it revisits the eerie, silent world tied to Will’s earliest encounters.
The episode is titled “The Crawl” and takes place on November 12, 1983, six days after Will’s disappearance, as revealed by Netflix’s Tudum.
A young Noah Schnapp portrays a 12-year-old Will sitting alone in the Upside Down’s version of Castle Byers. Visibly scared and exhausted, Will quietly sings Should I Stay or Should I Go, a song introduced by his brother Jonathan in Season 1 that has been an emotional anchor throughout the series.
"Should I Stay or Should I Go" has served as emotional grounding for him throughout the series.
Suddenly, strange sounds echo outside his fort. Will grabs a hunting rifle, reminiscent of the early episodes, and tries to defend himself. He climbs a tree, but the creature drags him down into Vecna’s lair.
This opening sequence deeply reconnects fans with Will’s original ordeal, setting a tense and haunting tone for the final chapter.
