Scott Buchholz, Opposition skills and training spokesman, warned against interpreting Sussan Ley’s “feminine politeness” as a sign of weakness. Buchholz emphasized the contrast between Ley’s consultative approach and the previous “authoritarian” style under Peter Dutton.
“Don’t mistake her feminine politeness for weakness. We have come from a previous leadership style of authoritarian [under Dutton] to now a consultative, and some people mistake that, but there are just different styles of leadership.”
Buchholz also addressed comments made by Victorian Liberal senator Sarah Henderson about Ley’s leadership, describing them as “career-limiting.” He noted the party is currently undergoing a grieving process after their election loss in May and requires time to recover.
Buchholz shared these views following a party event in Canberra, highlighting the internal struggles over leadership style within the party.

“I see Sussan doing incredible things, given the circumstances that she’s been having to do with it. I think what the party’s struggling with is the style of leadership that Susan brings.”
