One in three children in Romania live in poverty, new report says

According to a new report, more than one in three children in Romania, approximately 1.25 million, live in poverty.

The percentage of children living in poverty rises dramatically to 75.8% for those whose parents have a low level of education, based on 2024 Eurostat data cited by Save the Children Romania.

Romania has a high child poverty rate of around 33%, far above the EU average of 24.2%.

Nearly 1 in 4 children, a total of 19.5 million, continue to be exposed to the risk of poverty or social exclusion, according to the most recent Save the Children report.

Romania ranks third in the EU for the highest child poverty rate, after Bulgaria (35.1%) and Spain (34.6%).
