A study by the Center for Climate Integrity (CCI) in 2019 found that
67% of US voters thought the fossil fuel industry was “somewhat” or “very” responsible for the impacts of climate change. However, after being informed about the industry's historic deception, this number increased to 83%.

supported holding polluters accountable for climate damage costs, regardless of political party.
The fossil fuel industry has been aware of the potential climate damage caused by emissions from burning oil and gas for decades, but has
deliberately seeded doubt and confusion to keep the public in the dark.
