Tshwane Municipality Fails to Improve Living Conditions at Mamelodi Hostel

Living conditions for residents of Mamelodi Hostel have deteriorated since the last report in October 2022, with more broken windows and door handles, and dirty water from broken toilets and showers flowing in front of some rooms.

Human waste and rubbish are visible on the grounds, and residents are suffering from the poor conditions. John Shabangu, a 95-year-old resident who has lived in the hostel for over 30 years, says:

Our room is cold at night because its windows are broken. I often suffer from the flu because of the cold.

In 2022, the City of Tshwane promised to restore electricity and erect a fence, but nothing has been done. The City's spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo, had assured that the issues with electricity would be resolved, but the situation remains unchanged.

Residents like Shabangu, who loves the hostel and does not plan to leave, are forced to endure the harsh conditions. The lack of action from the City of Tshwane has led to further deterioration of the hostel.
