Police 'Surge' into Town Centres to Tackle Shoplifting

A summer campaign, called Summer Surge, has shown positive results in reducing shoplifting in three Calderdale towns.

The Government tasked politicians with policing responsibilities to work together to take visible action to help restore confidence in local communities, focusing on anti-social behaviour and keeping town centres safer.

According to Inspector Craig Collins of Calderdale Police, between July, August and September, there was a sizeable reduction in thefts from shops compared to the same period in 2024, with shoplifting reduced by almost 40 per cent.

The three town centres targeted were Halifax, Brighouse and Hebden Bridge, with Calderdale Council’s Crime and Disorder Committee hearing the results.
