Kansas legislators won't have a special session to join the US redistricting battle

Kansas Legislators Drop Redistricting Efforts

Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins has ended efforts to redraw U.S. House districts, avoiding a special session that would have thrust the state into a national battle for partisan advantage in the 2026 elections.

The decision concludes a weeks-long push by GOP lawmakers to circumvent Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly and call a special session on redistricting, which would have targeted four-term U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, the only Democrat in the state's four-person House delegation.

Redistricting would be "a top priority" early next year, according to state Senate President Ty Masterson.

Author's summary: Kansas drops redistricting efforts for now.
