Fighting Digital Deception in Canada
According to Natalie Turvey of the Canadian Journalism Foundation, Canadians can take action against the growing "truth crisis" on social media caused by AI-manipulated media and deepfakes.
Research by the Canadian Journalism Foundation shows that digital deception has become normalized online, threatening informed citizenship and democracy. Key findings include:
- Over half of Canadians encounter misleading content regularly.
- Nearly half have seen deepfake or AI-manipulated material.
- 30% report finding false or manipulated information presented as legitimate news several times a week.
- 17% come across it daily.
Young Canadians are disproportionately affected, with nearly 60% of 18- to 34-year-olds exposed to deceptive content daily or weekly. However, Gen Z is also more adept at recognizing AI-manipulated media, with 53% saying they can spot it.
Millions of Canadians scroll through their feeds daily, unsure what is real.
